a Prof.M.O.P.Iyengar
(1886-1963)
Prof.M.O.Parthasarathy Iyengar was born on 15th December, 1886, in Madras (now Chennai). He graduated from the Presidency College, Madras in 1906 and took his Master of Arts degree from the same institution in 1909. After serving two years at the Madras Museum as Curator in Botany, he joined the Madras Educational Service.  In another ten years he became Professor of Botany at the Presidency College.  In 1929 he went to London to work with Professor F.E.Fritsch at Queen Mary College, University of London, where he later took his doctorate.  On returning to India, he stayed a short while at the Presidecny College and then (1933) joined the University of Madras as ....  more ........

Professor Tamarapu Vedanta Desikachary a legend in algal research was born in Tirupati, on 18th September 1919. After educated at the Hindu High School, Tirupati, he took his B.Sc. Botany in 1940 and joined University Botany Laboratory under Prof. M.O.P.Iyengar. He worked on the taxonomy of Blue green algae under Prof. M.O.P.Iyengar, obtaining the M.Sc. Degdree in 1944.  He took his Ph.D. in 1951, also based on researches on Morphology and Taxonomy of Blue green algae under Prof. Iyengar's guidance.  In between, he was demonstrator, Andhra University,  at Presidency  College, later Assistant Professor, Pachaiyappa's College, Madras in 1945-1947 and   .... ...... more..... ..... ..........

Professor Vasudeva Krishnamurthy was born on 14th August, 1921 at Valavanur, Villupuram district.  His ancestral home is located in Pondicherry.  Professor V.K. as affectionately called by his students, took his B.A. Degree of Madras University with I classs and ranked II in the University.  He has graduated from St. Joseph's college, Tiruchirapalli, 1940.  He completed his B.Sc. (Hons.) Degree, Madras with II Class in Botany and ranked I in the Presidency.  He has been awarded the Pulny Gold Medal by the University of Madras.  Graduated from Presidency College, Chennai, 1942.  M.A. Degree, Madras awarded by efflux of time, University of Madras 1947.     more...

a Prof.M.S.Balakrishnan (10th February 1917 - 20th June 1990)
Prof. M.S.Balakrishnan, Professor and Head of the Department of Botany,  Poona University(Retd. in 1978) is a dedicated Indian Phycologist.   Prof. Balakrishnan was born on 10th February 1917 at Madras.  His parents
were both active in the struggle for national freedom.  His father gave up a  good position in Government service to join the civil disobedience movement.   His mother was a austere person, a Gandhian and an eminent writer in Tamnil.  Professor Balakrishnan had his education in Madras and took his B.Sc. (Hons.) degree in Botany from Pr
