Prof. Vellore Somasundaram Sundaralingam is the senior most Algologist in this Country, having started his research career as early as 1940 at the famed University Botany Laboratory, Chepauk, Madras, under the guidance of Prof.M.O.P. Iyengar, acclaimed as the Father of Algology.
He was born at Thiruchengode on 28th September 1918 to Sri. V. Somasundaram and Srimati Nagaratnammal. After graduating from Presidency College, Madras in 1938, he joined the MadrasUniversity Botany Laboratory. He took his M.Sc. Degree (by research) in 1944. ......   .....  Life-time achievement award
